1980s Japanese sample sources

The Weeknd's "Out of Time" prominently samples Tomoko Aran's 1983 track "Midnight Pretenders". Aran and Tetsurō Oda are listed in the songwriting credits; the sample is officially cleared.

Young Nudy & Playboi Carti's "Pissy Pamper" (2019, prod. Pi'erre Bourne) is reported to sample Mai Yamane's "Tasogare" (1980).

Ghostface Killah's "Angels" (from Fishscale, 2006, prod. MF DOOM) is reported to sample Kentaro Haneda's score for the anime Space Warrior Baldios (1980-81).

Smoke DZA's "No Regrets" (2021, ft. Dom Kennedy, prod. Harry Fraud) is reported to sample Junko Ohashi's "I Love You So" (1984).

Engelwood's "Crystal Dolphin" (2017) is a future-funk track built on a sample of Kingo Hamada's "Machi no Dolphin" (from Midnight Cruisin', 1982).

Jenevieve's "Baby Powder" (2020) is reported to interpolate Anri's "Last Summer Whisper" (from Heaven Beach, 1982, written by Toshiki Kadomatsu).

Danny Brown's "Fields" (2011, prod. Paul White) is reported to sample Geinoh Yamashirogumi's "Illusion" (from Akira, 1988).

$NOT & A$AP Rocky's "Doja" (2022, prod. Dee B.) samples the operatic vocals of the Japanese progressive-rock band Kenso's "Naibu e no Tsukikage" (from Kenso II, 1982). Kenso's Yoshihisa Shimizu is listed in the songwriting credits; the sample is officially cleared.

JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown's "Garbage Pale Kids" (from SCARING THE HOES, 2023) is reported to sample a 1983 Nintendo Famicom sports-games TV commercial (the "tennis" audio). The track also samples a Nichiro seasoned-lamb (jingisukan) commercial (see separate entry).

The repeated "jingisukan" (Genghis Khan) call that anchors "Garbage Pale Kids" comes from a Hokkaido-area TV commercial for Nichiro's seasoned lamb (jingisukan); the chant loops throughout the instrumental.
